Selmer Balanced Action Gold Plated Alto Saxophone #27,XXX - Larry Elgart

Product Description

Own a piece of jazz history! This gold plated Selmer Balanced Action alto was owned and played extensively by Larry Elgart, a veteran of the groups of Woody Herman, Red Norvo, and Tommy Dorsey, and a very popular bandleader in his own right. Larry had this horn gold plated; the result is a beautiful-sounding alto, resonant and fun to play from bottom to top!

Simply put, this horn sounds beautiful. Being a Balanced Action, it has a round, dark, haunting sound; however, most likely due to the gold plating, it is incredibly responsive, from low Bb up to the palm keys. The low register is full and dark; the middle register has a strong personality and charisma, great for playing ballads; the high register is wide and singing. This horn was overhauled very recently, and has metal resonators.

In addition to the gold plating, Larry also had a couple of modifications done. The most notable one is the additional engravings: he had his name engraved on the bell, and his initials engraved on the front of the neck. He had the octave mechanism from the Balanced Action neck switched out for the Mark VI octave mechanism with the famous “S” (most likely to give the impression that it was a newer-production model; he clearly didn’t want to part with this horn!). Additionally, there are cork risers on the left hand palm keys for playability.

All in all, this is a stunning horn; any collector or serious player would be lucky to include this in his arsenal!
